Golden Leaf Gilding Workshop in Venice

Guests are welcomed aboard a traditional Venetian rowing boat and accompanied by experienced vogatori through the canals toward the artisan workshop. The journey offers a unique perspective of Venice from the water before arriving at the studio where this historic craft continues to be practiced.

For centuries, Venice has been a center of extraordinary craftsmanship, and gilding has played a crucial role in decorating the city’s palaces, churches, and ceremonial objects. The use of gold leaf can be admired throughout the city, from ornate frames and mirrors to furniture, ceilings, decorative chests, and theatrical masks.

The tradition also extended to grand ceremonial vessels such as the legendary Bucintoro, the magnificent state barge built in 1731 for the Republic of Venice, richly decorated with gilded carvings.

During the visit, participants will meet a master doratore who continues this tradition today. The artisan will demonstrate the delicate process used to apply gold leaf to wooden or decorative surfaces. The preparation involves traditional materials such as gesso, clay, egg white, and fish glue, which are carefully applied before the thin sheet of gold is placed and polished.
