Discover the fascinating world of marbled paper in the workshop of one of Venice’s most renowned artisans, where centuries-old decorative techniques are still practiced today.
Guests are welcomed aboard a traditional Venetian rowing boat and accompanied by experienced vogatori through the canals toward the artisan atelier. The journey through Venice’s waterways offers a unique introduction to the city before arriving at the historic workshop where the art of paper marbling continues to thrive.
During the visit, participants will observe the creation of marbled paper using traditional techniques dating back to the 16th century, preserved and transmitted through generations of craftsmen. The process uses specialized tools, natural materials, seaweed-based solutions, and pigments similar to those employed by artisans of the past.
The decorative technique of paper marbling traces its origins to Persia in the 15th century, later spreading across Europe where it became widely appreciated for the decoration of books, documents, and artistic objects. Venice, an important publishing center in past centuries, played a key role in the diffusion of this art, particularly for the decoration of book covers.
The process begins with the preparation of a natural liquid solution poured into a shallow tray. Drops of colored pigments are then gently placed on the surface, where they float and expand. Using delicate tools and controlled movements, the artisan manipulates the pigments to create flowing patterns and intricate designs reminiscent of marble, waves, or abstract textures.
Once the design is ready, a sheet of paper is carefully laid onto the colored surface. The pattern instantly transfers onto the paper, creating a unique composition that can never be exactly replicated.
Under the guidance of Master Stefano, participants will also have the opportunity to create their own marbled sheet, experimenting with the pigments and tools used by the artisan. Each participant will take home their handmade marbled paper as a personal souvenir of the experience.
Every sheet created through this technique is completely unique—a harmonious combination of color, movement, and artistic intuition that reflects the creativity of the moment.
