Craft Your Own Mosaic Workshop in Venice

Discover the ancient art of mosaic-making in Venice with a visit to a traditional artisan workshop where this historic technique continues to be practiced today.

Guests are welcomed aboard a traditional Venetian rowing boat and accompanied by experienced vogatori through the canals toward the artisan’s studio. The journey through the waterways offers a unique introduction to the city before arriving at the workshop where the art of mosaic creation is still carried on by skilled craftsmen.

The tradition of Venetian mosaics dates back many centuries and is famously represented in the decorations of the magnificent St Mark's Basilica, whose interiors are covered with extraordinary golden mosaics.

During the visit, participants will learn how the small pieces that compose a mosaic—known as tesserae—are still produced and assembled by hand. The artisan will demonstrate how each tiny element is carefully cut and positioned to create complex images and decorative patterns.

Guests will also discover the fascinating process behind the famous golden mosaics. The thin sheets of 24-carat gold leaf used in these works are produced by specialized artisans known as battioro, who repeatedly hammer pure gold with small tools until it becomes an extremely delicate and luminous foil.

After the introduction and demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to try creating their own small mosaic, experimenting with the materials and techniques used by the artisan. This hands-on moment allows guests to experience the patience and creativity required for this historic art form.
